Opening Center of Excellence „Mittelstand 4.0“

One of the five nationwide centers of excellences for “Mittelstand 4.0” (middle class 4.0) is placed in Aachen. Goal of the Initiative of the Federal Ministry of Economics is the support of small and medium-sized enterprises for the creation of new business areas in the context of “Industry 4.0”. The Competence Center “Mittelstand 4.0 West”, consists of an association of research facilities from Aachen, Dortmund and Ostwestfalen. Expertise in production technology for the so called “Hub Rheinland” was represented by the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University and the Institute for Industrial Management (FIR e.V.).

On July 8, 2016, the location Rheinland was solemnly inaugurated at the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of the RWTH Aachen University and presented to numerous guests from industry and research by Professor Robert Schmitt, head of the Chair of Production Metrology and Quality Management, and Dr. Patrick Beaujean, Manager of the Competence Center and Executive Chief Engineer at the Chair. Here, the key issues “Digitization” and “Networking” are to be made more comprehensible and accessible to small and medium-sized enterprises from the region.
