BMBF "Research in Germany"

Outstanding, innovative and open-minded

"Research in Germany" is the central marketing for Germany as a location for research and innovation and is part of the internationalisation strategy of the Federal Government. Its aim is to develop and sustainably establish a positive, innovation- and future-oriented image of Germany at home and abroad through networked marketing of the German research landscape.

"Research in Germany" is to be understood as a building block in a broad spectrum of initiatives that promote Germany as a location for science and research with different focal points and target groups. Important partners at home and abroad in this context include: the economic development agency of the Federal Republic of Germany "Germany Trade & Invest" (GTAI), the "Study in Germany" initiative, the "GATE-Germany" consortium, the German Centres for Research and Innovation (DWIH) and the German Chambers of Commerce Abroad (AHK).

The "Research in Germany" initiative is supported by the measures of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (FhG), the international campaigns of the BMBF, the activities to professionalize marketing in the German Centres Research and the services offered by the DWIH.



GATE-Germany supports German universities by providing marketing instruments and expertise to present and position their study and research offers internationally.
The DAAD contributes to the work of GATE-Germany with its worldwide network of branch offices and information centres as well as its comprehensive international competence.

With its expertise at the interface of university marketing and internationalisation, GATE-Germany supports German universities,

  • to position itself actively and purposefully in the international university landscape,
  • to present its rich potential in a professional and convincing way in order to recruit highly qualified students, doctoral candidates and university lecturers worldwide,
  • to maintain Germany's international reputation as an attractive and competitive research location in the medium and long term.

The target group and region-specific offers of GATE-Germany take into account the different needs of the universities.

The consortium exclusively pursues non-profit goals and tasks.

Kernaufgabe der Deutschen Wissenschafts- und Innovationshäuser (DWIH) ist es, an ihren Standorten deutsche Wissenschaft, Forschung und Innovation zu repräsentieren.

DWIH sind ein Zusammenschluss deutscher Wissenschaftsorganisationen, Hochschulen und der forschenden Wirtschaft. An fünf Standorten weltweit ermöglichen die DWIH einen gemeinsamen Auftritt deutscher Innovationsträger, bieten ein Schaufenster für die Leistungsfähigkeit deutscher Forschung und vernetzen diese mit Kooperationspartnern vor Ort.

Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation)

The DFG is the self-governing organisation for science and research in Germany. It serves all branches of science and the humanities. In organisational terms, the DFG is an association under private law. Its membership consists of German research universities, non-university research institutions, scientific associations and the Academies of Science and the Humanities.

The DFG promotes excellence by selecting the best research projects on a competitive basis and facilitating national and international collaboration among researchers. Its mandate also includes encouraging the advancement and training of early career researchers, promoting gender equality in the German scientific and academic communities, providing scientific policy advice, and fostering relations between the research community and society and the private sector.

The DFG receives the large majority of its funds from the federal government and the states, which are represented in all grants committees. At the same time, the voting system and procedural regulations guarantee science-driven decisions.

Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD)

"Scholarships for the Best" - "Structures for Internationalisation" - "Expertise for Academic Collaboration"

The DAAD is an association of German institutions of higher education and their student bodies. Convening in a general assembly, they elect the Executive Committee which oversees the organisation’s day-to-day operations. Since it was founded in 1925, the DAAD has supported more than 1.9 million academics in Germany and abroad. It relies on a strong organisational structure, a worldwide network of partners and alumni and a motivated staff of over 900 employees.

The most important responsibilities of the DAAD include granting scholarships, promoting the internationalisation activities of German universities and research organisations, strengthening German cultural and language studies abroad and helping developing countries establish productive higher education institutions. The DAAD is also the National Agency for EU Higher Education Cooperation.

AvH – Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung

Vision: Excellence connects

AvH promotes academic cooperation between excellent scientists and scholars from abroad and from Germany. 

  • Financing of research scholarships and research awards (to finance a stay in Germany, a research project of your own choice to be carried out with a host and cooperation partner)
  • Funding for stays abroad as a researcher*in Germany to participate in a research project as a guest of one of over 30,000 Humboldtians worldwide, the Humboldt Foundation's alumni.
  • Promotion of international cultural dialogue and academic exchange as a mediating organisation of German foreign cultural and educational policy.
