CoE-Conference and General Assembly

The two regularly scheduled semi-annual events, the CoE-Conference and the General Assembly of the Cluster of Excellence “Integrative Production Technology for High-Wage Countries” took place on March 24 to 25, 2015. Starting with the CoE-Conference, in which the project team members gave an overview of the developments in their sub-projects in more than 30 sessions, all employees met for an interdisciplinary exchange. At the General Assembly Professor Dr. Christian Brecher of the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering of RWTH Aachen University and speaker of the Cluster of Excellence offered an overall survey of the past six months. Managing Director Dipl.-Ing. Denis Özdemir gave a supplementing report on the operative business.

The lecture program focused on three thematic priorities. Professor Gerhard Hirt of the Institute of Metal Forming (IBF) of the RWTH Aachen started the lecture program. In the course of the General Assembly he was re-elected unanimously as a member of the Steering Committee until the end of the term of the Excellence Initiative. With his lecture on "Integrated Technologies for Incremental Sheet Forming of High Strength Materials" and Professor Peter Loosen’s (Chair for Technology of Optical Systems (TOS) at RWTH Aachen University) lecture on "Self-optimizing Precision Assembly of Optical Systems" two main areas of the CoE-research were on the agenda.

Professor Dr. Markus Schwaninger of the Department of Business (IFB) of the University of St. Gallen, who is an expert for organizational and management cybernetics, was welcomed as a guest speaker on the topic “The Diagnostic Strength of the Viable System Model (VSM)”. In the research field “Self-optimizing Production Systems” of the Cluster of Excellence it is investigated how the VSM can support these production systems.

Moreover, Professor Schwaninger was in Aachen in the context of a three-day workshop from March 24 to 26, 2015. Together with scientists from the Cluster of Excellence Schwaninger discussed the latest developments regarding the implementation of the already in the first phase developed reference model, which is based on the VSM by Stafford Beer. This workshop was organized by FIR of RWTH Aachen, which is involved in the Cluster of Excellence.

In addition to increasing the performance of technical systems, the goal in the area of self-optimizing production systems is to develop socio-technical systems. The Viable System Model provides the Aachen scientists with a good basis for evaluating the organizational processes of production systems regularly, to adapt them if necessary and to lead the individual sections to an overarching target system. Also, in the research area “Cross Sectional Processes” of the Cluster of Excellence scientists work on the development of a production theory which integrates both deterministic as well as cybernetic model approaches, such as the VSM, into an overarching framework. The aim of the project is to connect models and theories of the individual research areas of the Cluster and ultimately to merge them into a new technology-oriented production theory.
