“Today we are at the beginning of a new industrial age. Production technology, information technology and communications technology fuse together and provide great flexibility and opportunities for companies”, Professor Dr. Günther Schuh from the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University describes the development within the frame of the fourth industrial revolution. New developments in production technology - both in software and hardware – have already changed the everyday operation in manufacturing companies. Especially the increased use of information and communications technology, intelligent and active sensors, the progressive automation as well as the potential of social networks will further reinforce this trend in the coming years and lead to increases in productivity.

“We assume that over the next ten years the effective productivity in production is doubled by this development - with an almost constant strength of executives, experts and planners. This represents a huge potential for the sustainability of companies in Germany and Europe”, Prof. Schuh adds to the basic idea created within the Excellent Initiative with the Cluster of Excellence “Integrative Production Technology for High-Wage Countries”. Since October 2006, more than 120 researchers from more than 25 institutes and research institutions focus on this topic.

The potential of the networking of different disciplines such as mechanical engineering, business administration, mathematics or psychology not only increases the productivity, but also integrates the indirect areas along the entire value chain.
