Cluster Participation at (virtual) ICEIS 2020
From May 5 to 7, Johannes Lipp, research assistant at Fraunhofer FIT, took part in this year's virtual ICEIS. The 22nd International Conference on Enterprise Information Systems, which was originally supposed to be held in Prague, offered opportunities for scientific exchange on the future of Information Systems and possible business applications. This year, the conference took place remotely and offered a virtual opportunity for discussion because of corona protective measures. The streaming-based conference brought together scientists, researchers and engineers from all over the world and was dedicated to the subject area of information systems and real application scenarios for the latest developments in the research field. Among other things, the topics of system integration, artificial intelligence, decision support and the relationship between humans and systems were the focus of lectures and sessions.© Source: ICEIS

When To Collect What? Optimizing Data Load via Process-driven Data Collection
", in which the opportunities but also the requirements of effective production technology in the context of the Internet of Things become visible at the level of data collection.
Since the IoT and the ever increasing connectivity of production technology devices can provide a wealth of information to data systems that need to be used efficiently, production technology needs options to select and collect this data in a targeted manner. "Classically, you save on the wealth or accuracy of available values in order to master them - and important information is lost in the process," explains Lipp with reference to the challenge. In workstream WS-A.I of CRD-A the researchers are working on an approach that models a production cycle and precisely defines the data that will later be relevant for the optimization of production. This should make it easier for engineers to collect exactly the data that is needed, and at exactly the right time. A feasible approach which allows the amount of data to be drastically reduced is designed in this manner. The extracted data is limited to what is relevant and the resulting optimization potential is made accessible to engineers through the modeling.
Most of the conferences are now taking place virtually - for the scientific community it is neccessary to adapt to the situation. This year's ICEIS has survived the transition to the new virtual format. A stable flow of communication in advance, early tests, virtual coffee breaks with chat rooms and the opportunity to create a kind of "virtual timetable" with lectures and events have contributed to the success.
Nevertheless, an important aspect of international conference visits is difficult to replace. Personal contact and the socializing sessions between posters and coffee are often exactly the places where informal scientific exchange takes place, where collaborations and projects can arise. Johannes Lipp also confirms the importance of the interpersonal aspects and the usual travel to international conferences: “ Personally, I miss two things from the pre-corona conference business the most: the focus on the research content, not least due to the spatial distance of another country and the break created from everyday work, as well as the opportunity to exchange ideas "on the sidelines of the event" at social events and coffee breaks. ”
It is obvious that the scientific exchange must continue even in times of Corona: “Science lives from intensive discussions about yesterday, today and tomorrow. The high standards of excellent research require a close exchange in international communities, since the experts conduct research all over the world. ”
