25 seniors from MINT-schools across Germany – from Sylt to Munich, as well as from the Netherlands, Spain and Scotland spent a whole summer vacation week in Aachen in the context of “Schüleruni Maschinenbau” (University for Pupils in mechanical engineering) from August 1 to 5, 2016. The prospective graduates were invited to experience the world of engineering studies on-site. Again, the Cluster of Excellence got involved in the program, offered an insight into everyday working life and research reality of scientists and answered questions about studying in the field of mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen. The Central Student Advisory Service at RWTH Aachen (ZSB) kicked off the event with all the basic information and an answer to what “studying” actually means and entails. Svenja Schiwatsch of the ZSB gave a great overview of the subjects, talked about studying in general at RWTH Aachen and answered all questions about what might follow graduation from school in detail. What is a lecture or a tutorial, what are Credit Points and semester week hours? In addition to a metrology tutorial at the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL), braiding and weaving fiber composites at the Institute of Textile Technology (ITA) and a logistics beer game (FIR e.V.), the prospective engineers were able to experiment with robots in the student laboratory of the Cybernetics Cluster IMA/ZLW & IfU and received an insight of the world of laser technology at Fraunhofer ILT. But the scientists were also happy to answer personal questions and give advice on staying abroad or internships. And herein all agreed: In addition to studying, one should gain a lot of experience and not get overwhelmed by standard study periods and requirements. It is also important to broaden one’s horizon, for example by taking the opportunity to work and travel abroad after graduation since that way one can learn a lot for life and studying. In fact, having a good command of the English language is essential for a future as a scientist, and the best way to learn a language is going abroad. The Cluster of Excellence is looking forward to meeting interested students at “Schüleruni Maschinenbau” next year and also to welcome one or the other of this year’s participants as engineering students, or in general as students at RWTH Aachen this autumn.
