Pupils University Mechanical Engineering Offered Great Insights Into Studying and Life at University
The 22 pupils taking part in this year’s Pupils University did not only accept one week less of summer holidays, but many also overcame great distances and showed a high level of commitment to receive the chance of discovering the world of mechanical engineering in Aachen over the course of a whole week. The 16 to 18 year old participants, coming from schools spanning a distance from Wismar to Saarbrücken as well as from German Schools in Turkey, England and Portugal, vistited Aachen from July 24 – 28. Their visit to RWTH Aachen University was geared towards informing themselves about the framework conditions, contents and everything they need to know about studying mechanical engineering at the university.”It was pretty great because we were able to get an insight into local student life and the topics of the degree programm in mechanical engineering”, Rafael (16) from Porto (Portugal) summarizes.
The on-site experience has definitely reassured him in his choice of wanting to study mechanical engineering, he says. The other participants expressed similar views. Be it a lecture with a subsequent seminar about “industrial robotics” at the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL), programming humanoid roboters in the Roboscope at the IMA/ZLW & IfU or an insight into the exiting world of textile technology at the ITA, the week offered interesting activities for every type of participant. The wide range of topics within different core sectors of mechanical engineering included process enigineering and production technology, plastics technology, as well as fascinating experiments on laser technology and optical systems. “One of my highlights of the week was the Textile Institute (ITA) because I want to work within the field of medical engineering in the future and we were able to learn very much about this topic at the institute.”, Isabell (17) from Stuttgart evaluates the week enthusiastically along with Lara (17) from Wismar. “I also enjoyed the Roboscope very much; it was a fun experience in a relaxed atmosphere. Meeting the students was very cool and the collaboration with the other participants was very enjoyable. I also really liked the guided tours through the Innovationlabs at the Cluster Smart Logistic.”
